I have welcomed more than a thousand children to their first class, and I can usually tell within ten minutes not whether a child is 'talented' — that word means little at age six — but whether they are ready. Here is what readiness actually looks like.
Notice what is not on that list: aggression, athleticism, or age above some magic number. Our Little Dragons and Kids Judo programs start at four and six respectively, and the curriculum is games-first — obstacle courses, animal walks, balance battles — with technique hidden inside the fun.
Two decades of research and our own experience say the opposite. Children learn that their skills are for the mat only, they burn aggression in a controlled space, and the bowing, waiting and turn-taking build self-regulation. Schools report calmer classrooms, not scrappier ones.
Shy children are my favourite students. The mat gives them a script for confidence — bow, answer, try, fail safely, try again — until one day the script becomes the child.
If you saw two or more signs above, book a free trial. Stay and watch the whole class — we insist on it. You will know by the end whether the mat is calling.
