Inside a Belt Grading: What Actually Happens On The Big Day

Grading day is the heartbeat of the academy calendar. Twice a year, every hall fills with pressed uniforms, nervous parents and the particular silence that comes before names are called. If your first grading is approaching, here is exactly what to expect.

Before you step on the mat

You will not be entered unless your coach believes you are ready — that is our first promise. Attendance, effort and conduct over the whole term count as much as the day itself. By the time you bow in, the grading is yours to confirm, not to gamble.

The examination

• Basics: stances, strikes or breakfalls performed on command
• Forms: your kata or poomsae, performed solo before the panel
• Application: partner drills, throws or controlled sparring by level
• Spirit test: the final minutes, when tired technique must still stand up
• Knowledge: terminology and etiquette questions for senior grades

Examiners are looking for standard, not perfection. A wobble recovered with composure often scores better than easy polish — because composure is the thing we are actually teaching.

The belt does not change you in the moment it is tied. It certifies a change that already happened, one Tuesday evening at a time.

Results are announced the same day. Around nine in ten candidates pass — and those who do not are given a precise, private list of what to strengthen, plus a free re-attempt at the next cycle. Either way, you bow out taller than you bowed in.
